* Fizeau call open *

The Fizeau exchange visitors program in optical interferometry funds

(travel and accommodation) visits of researchers to an institute of

his/her choice (within the European Community) to perform collaborative

work and training. The program is open for all levels of astronomers (Ph.D. students to tenured staff). The deadline for applications is the 15th September for visits starting 1st of November.

INTERNATIONAL MAX PLANCK RESEARCH SCHOOL (IMPRS)
FOR ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS
AT THE UNIVERSITIES OF BONN AND COLOGNE
PhD POSITIONS IN ASTRONOMY
Call for Applications
*** Deadline: November 15, 2009 ***
============================================================
PLEASE DOWNLOAD AND POST AT YOUR INSTITUTION THE POSTER FOR THIS CALL
The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne, funded by the German Max Planck Society, invites applications for its doctoral program. It is a collaboration between the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR), the Argelander-Institut für Astronomie (AIfA) of the University of Bonn and the I. Physikalisches Institut at the University of Cologne. The official and working language of the school is English.
It offers PhD courses both in observational and theoretical astrophysics, covering a wide range of topics ranging from observational radio interferometry to theoretical cosmology, such as:
Structure and Kinematics of AGN Jets * Galactic Masers: Nature and Application to Astrophysics * Intra-Day Variability * Infra-Red Interferometry of Disks and Jets of Young Stars * Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry Development * Interstellar Matter in Galaxies * Infra-Red Interferometry of AGN * Strong and Weak Gravitational Lensing * Galactic and Extragalactic Magnetic Fields * High Precision Astrometry * Envelopes of Evolved Stars * Radiative Transfer Modeling * Star Formation in the Milky Way and Other Galaxies * Astroparticle Physics * Supermassive Binary Black Holes in AGN * Observational Cosmology * Stellar Populations * Star Clusters * Satellite Galaxies * Galactic Dynamics * Binary Pulsars * Neutron Stars * Experimental
tests of gravity * Transient Radio Sky.
A list of suggested PhD projects can be found at: http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/pdf/PhD_projects.pdf
IMPRS offers a competitive PhD program including advanced lectures on fundamental astrophysical fields, soft-skills seminars
(e.g. presentation skills, time management, scientific reading etc.), bi-weekly students seminars. Annually, the students reside in the country side for a-few-day workshop. The three hosting institutions provide a thriving environment of ever-growing scientific inspiration with lively colloquium talks given by experts from all over the globe as well as a wealth of university courses. Thesis committees monitor the progress of each student and provide scientific feedback to the PhD course.
The students are traveling to international schools, conferences and the best observing facilities around the world. They are exposed to the most advanced techniques and methods using state-of-the-art earth-bound or space observatories (at energy bands from radio to gamma-rays). Such as, the unique 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg and the most advanced instruments in millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy. The MPIfR is one of the world centers for Very Long Baseline Interferometry, which utilizes a global network of radio telescopes for achieving the highest possible angular resolutions.
The call for applications is open until November 15, 2009. Encouraged to apply are students from all countries with an M.Sc. degree or diploma (preferably including a thesis) in Physics or closely related subjects. Solid astrophysical background is highly favored.
More details on the IMPRS program and the admission requirements and process can be found at the IMPRS website: www.mpifr.de/english/IMPRS

POSTDOC, COMPUTATIONAL AND OBSERVATIONAL STUDIED OF STAR FORMATION WITH ALMA AND HERSCHEL

Effective immediately, a two-year postdoctoral position is

available at Leiden Observatory, in connection with the ASTRONET-

funded project ARTIST: Adaptable Radiative Transfer Innovations for

Submillimeter Telescopes. The primary tasks of the postdoc will be

to develop and test interfaces between existing theoretical

descriptions of low-mass star formation and the modeling tools

designed within ARTIST. Throughout, comparison to data form

existing telescopes (such as JCMT, APEX, CARMA, SMA, and Herschel)

will be used to apply the developed tools.

The ARTIST project is a collaboration between Leiden Observatory,

the Argelander Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn,

and the Institut de Ciencies de l'Espa, Barcelona (see

http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/ARC/artist). The project aims to

develop the next generation modeling suite for comprehensive multi-

dimensional radiative transfer calculations of dust and line

emission, and is specifically designed for ALMA and Herschel. Low-

mass star formation is explicitly taken as a research inspiration

for ARTIST, although wider applicability is foreseen.

A demonstrated background in star formation studies is required.

The postdoc will have ample opportunity to pursue her/his own

research, including collaborations with members of the network.

Leiden Observatory is at the forefront of astronomical research and

has a strong international character. We offer a competitive salary

and excellent benefits. All research facilities of Leiden

Observatory are available to the postdoc.

Applicants should send a CV, publication list, a statement of

research interests, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. M.R.

Hogerheijde at michiel@strw.leidenuniv.nl. Evaluation of the

applications starts October 1 2009 and continues until the position

is filled.

CAS project for foreign young scientists

recently the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) founded a new project to

attract young foreign scientists to come to work in China for a period of

0.5 to 1 year. The qualified candidates has to be a PhD younger than 35

with at least 3 years postdoc or stuff experiences in some well known

institutes. The CAS will provide 100,000 RMB Yuan (approximately 10,000

Euro) for a half year or 200,000 RMB Yuan for one full year working in a

institute of mainland China. The deadline is Jan. 31, 2010, and the funding

starts from July 1, 2010.

In case of interest please email Dr. Henkel chenkel@mpifr-bonn.mpg.de
