ANNOUNCEMENT: ALMA COMMUNITY DAY, 8. OCTOBER 2009, BONN
-------------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
On Thursday October 8th, the Argelander Institute for Astronomy will host
the first German ALMA community day. As many of you will know, the Atacama
Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is currently under construction
in Chile. ALMA will be completed by 2013, and a first open call for early
science observing time will likely be issued by the end of next year. ALMA
is a collaboration between Europe, North America, and East Asia in
cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA promises to make important
contributions to many fields of astronomy, including the study of high
redshift and nearby galaxies, star and planet formation, evolved stars and
the solar system.
ALMA scientific and technical support for users within the ESO community is
the responsibility of the European ALMA Regional Center (ARC), which is
organized as a coordinated network of local support nodes. The central node
is located at ESO Headquarters in Garching. The German community is mainly
supported by a node located at the universities of Bonn, Cologne, and
Bochum, and by a node located at IRAM in Grenoble.
The purpose of this community day is to inform the German astronomical
community on recent ALMA developments, on expected observing capabilities,
and on the planned user support. There will be a number of presentations on
ALMA and ALMA science, with an emphasis on the German perspective. There
will be time for 6-8 contributed talks, and for posters.
To register, please send an email with

If you like to contribute a presentation or poster, please include a title
and abstract if possible. Registration of contributions will close
Sept. 19th. More information on the German community day can be found at
http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/ARC/.
The community day will be preceded by a 3-day tutorial on CASA, the ALMA
data reduction package. Please note the separate announcement below.
Also note that the ARC will set up a mailing list for ALMA announcements
within the next few weeks. A separate announcement will follow, but you can
send us an email at arc@astro.uni-bonn.de if you want to pre-register for
the email list.

ANNOUNCEMENT: CASA TUTORIAL, 5-7. OCTOBER 2009, BONN
----------------------------------------------------
The German ALMA Regional Centre node at Bonn University, in cooperation with
the ESO ARC node, invites you to participate in a tutorial on the ALMA data
reduction package CASA. The tutorial will take place at the Argelander
Institute for Astronomy in Bonn on Oct 5 to 7, 2009.
The Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) package will be the
primary data reduction software for all ALMA data, as well as data from
other future radio astronomical telescopes. The tutorial will include
introductory talks on most aspects of basic data reduction and will allow
ample time for participants practicing their data reduction skills, either
on test data or on their own data.
To register, please send an email
To: arc@astro.uni-bonn.de
Subject: [CASA tutorial]
Please indicate whether you will be able to bring your laptop. While we will
have CASA available on local desktops, it would be preferable if you could
bring your own laptop. Information on CASA installation will be sent shortly
before the tutorial. Registration closes Sept 18th. Since the
tutorial must be limited to 20 participants, please do register as soon as
possible! For more information, visit
