CNAA Postdoctoral Fellowship in Observational Cosmology
OSSERVATORIO ASTRONOMICO DI BRERA
Via Bianchi 46, I-22055
Merate (LC), ITALY
Attention: Prof. Guido Chincarini, Director
(E-mail: guido@merate.mi.astro.it)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A postdoctoral fellowship from the Italian Consorzio Nazionale
Astronomia e
Astrofisica, in the field of observational cosmology will be
available at
the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (OAB), starting September
1997. The
postdoctoral fellow will join the cosmology group at OAB and will
concentrate on the analysis of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS), with the
specific aim of selecting a complete sample of distant clusters of
galaxies
which will form the basis for subsequent detailed studies with the
ESO VLT
telescope. We are particularly interested in individuals with
experience in
the field of clusters of galaxies and the high-z Universe.
Familiarity with
image processing packages and with the development of cluster
searching
algorithms will be an asset.
The OAB is a very active center in science & technology research.
Scientific
interests in extragalactic astronomy include among others large-scale
structure and clusters of galaxies, active galactic nuclei, stellar
population synthesis models. One recent major achievement is the ESP
redshift survey. The technology group is deeply involved in the
development
of instrumentation for both optical and X-ray astronomy. Major
highlights
include the design of the X-ray mirrors for the BeppoSAX, Jet-X and
XMM
satellites, and the development of DOLORES, the low-resolution
spectrograph
for the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo ( TNG). Advanced projects in
their
early phases are partnerships in the "VIRMOS Consortium" - that in
the next
two years will build two multi-object spectrographs for the ESO VLT
and
perform a deep redshift survey of a million galaxies - and in the
High-Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy (HTXS) mission - that will bring
X-ray
spectroscopy to resolutions comparable to those of optical spectra.
Appointment is contingent upon evidence of completion of a Ph.D. or
equivalent in Astrophysics or a related field. The date of Ph.D.
should not
be earlier than July 1992. The duration of the fellowship will be of
one
year.
Interested individuals should send a Curriculum Vitae, list of
publications,
a statement of research interests, and a copy of their Ph.D. thesis
to the
above address. They should also arrange to have three letters of
reference
sent directly to the same address. Applications mailed before July
31, 1997
will be given full consideration. Please indicate clearly on the
envelope
reference to "CNAA Fellowship - EIS Survey".
